Biography

Karpoori Thakur, born to Gokul Thakur and Ramdulari Devi in the village of Pitaunjha, now known as Karpoori Gram in Bihar's Samastipur district, held the essence of simplicity. He hailed from the Nai (Barber) community, but his influence reached far beyond, inspired by Mahatma Gandhi and Satya Narayan Sinha. Choosing a path resonant with their ideals, he joined the All India Students Federation, actively participating in student movements. A student activist, he abandoned his undergraduate studies to join the Quit India Movement, enduring 26 months in prison for his role in India's struggle for independence.

Post-independence, Thakur became a teacher in his village school. In 1952, he entered Bihar Legislative Assembly as a member from Tajpur constituency, representing the Socialist Party. Arrested during the nationwide strike of Central Government employees in 1960, he led the P&T employees during the general strike. In 1970, he undertook a 28-day hunger strike in support of oil workers.

A lover of the Hindi language, Thakur as Bihar's Education Minister, removed English as a compulsory subject from the matriculation curriculum. Unfortunately, this led to a decline in the standard of English education in Bihar, posing challenges for the students. Thakur served as a minister and deputy chief minister in Bihar before supporting the first non-Congress socialist chief minister in 1970. During his tenure, he imposed a complete ban on alcohol in Bihar and established several schools and colleges in underprivileged areas.

Karpoori Thakur, affectionately called the "Jan Nayak," lived a saga of support, courage, and patriotism. His life was a narrative of dedication and love for the upliftment of his state. As a true Jan Nayak, he dedicated his life to the poor and enthusiastic youth.

On this momentous occasion, we salute his bravery and selfless spirit. Being honored with the Bharat Ratna elevates him to a category that further highlights his greatness, reminding the nation of an exemplary leader.

Karpoori Thakur, your greatness fills us with pride, and we wish peace for your immortal soul. We will forever be grateful for your service and sacrifice. Rest in eternal peace, noble soul.
